Jodi-Alissa Bickerton is a theatre maker, facilitator, and Deputy Artistic Director of Graeae Theatre Company, the pioneering deaf and disabled-led touring company that has spent more than four decades reshaping what theatre can be.
Rooted in the social model of disability, Jodi’s work brings together creativity, social justice, and community. At the heart of Graeae’s approach is what the company calls the “aesthetics of access” embedding captioning, sign language, and audio description into the artistic fabric of a production so that accessibility becomes part of the storytelling itself rather than an afterthought.
Led by curiosity, Jodi approaches her work with a simple philosophy: ask questions, listen deeply, and build creative spaces where people have what they need to thrive. Whether working with emerging artists, young people, or theatre institutions looking to evolve, she is driven by a belief that difference is not something to fear but something profoundly beautiful.
In conversation with Mike, Jodi reflects on identity, resilience, and the power of human connection, exploring how theatre, storytelling, and community can help shift perceptions and create a world where everyone’s voice has a place.
