Julie Weir is not your typical music industry executive.
As Director of Music for Nations (Sony Music UK), she’s been a pioneering force in heavy music, championing artists who challenge the mainstream and speak straight to the soul.
From her early days running the iconic Visible Noise label, home to breakout acts like Bring Me the Horizon and Bullet for My Valentine, Julie has always had a nose for the new and a heart for the real.
But Julie’s influence goes beyond A&R. She’s a vocal advocate for equity, inclusion, and wellbeing in the music industry.
Her work with organisations like the Music Managers Forum and Youth Music reflects a deep commitment to reshaping the culture behind the scenes, not just the sound on stage. A passionate mentor, she is particularly focused on creating opportunities for working-class and northern voices in a London-centric industry.
Growing up in Workington, Julie embraced outsider culture early finding strength in subcultures, style, and the inspiration of kindred spirits who gave her the confidence to express herself unapologetically.
She speaks candidly about aging in an industry obsessed with youth, and the power of staying creatively young by staying curious, collaborative, and deeply connected to the music.
Julie’s conversation with Mike is a return to roots and a reckoning with growth.
Together, they explore how we evolve while staying true to what first lit the fire; talking candidly about finding meaning in midlife, creating space for others, and why belonging - whether in bands, communities, or conversations -might be the most radical act of all.
Julie Weir is on DO Radio Where To Next with Mike Warwick 16 to 22 February. Tune in or catch her show on the archive.
