Satish Kumar is an activist, author and one of the most influential voices in the environmental movement.
He became a Jain monk at the age of nine before leaving monastic life as a teenager, inspired by Gandhi’s ideas of non-violence and social change. In 1962, Satish and his friend E. P. Menon set off on an extraordinary 8,000-mile peace pilgrimage, walking without money from India to Moscow, Paris, London and Washington to campaign for nuclear disarmament.
Satish later became editor of Resurgence magazine, a role he held for more than 40 years, and co-founded Schumacher College, which became internationally known for its teaching around ecology, sustainability and holistic thinking.
Now Editor Emeritus of Resurgence & Ecologist and President Emeritus of Schumacher College, his work continues to explore the relationship between ecology, economics, spirituality and what he describes as “soil, soul and society”.
