Can changing ordinary life change how we feel?

Could a few small changes make us a little happier?

More time with friends. Less time on our phones. A little adventure. A proper laugh.

The things we keep meaning to do. Let’s do them.

100 people. 12 months. One question.

1% Happier

Here's how it works

Small enough to try. Interesting enough to find out.
Month 1. Observe
Live normally and record your baseline mood.
Months 2-10. Experiments
9 experiments. One new experiment each month. No experiment in August.
2 x Passes
Life gets busy. You can choose to skip two experiments.
How was your mood today?
Answer the same mood question each evening to record your mood. (Mood app included)
Group Support
Your buddies check in with you daily. Your group meets once a month.
One gathering in London
In December 2027 we'll meet in London to discuss "What changed?" The findings. The stories. The habits people want to keep.
month 1

First, carry on as usual.

For the first month, live your ordinary life.

Each evening, record how you feel using the same simple mood question in your mood app. Meet your group. Get to know your buddy.

Before we change anything, let’s notice where we are.

months 2-10

Then, shake a few things up.

Each month brings an experiment.

You’ll know the options before you begin and if an experiment isn't for you or if life gets busy, you have two skips you can use at any time.

DO Wales - Sharing - Friendship - Writing - Phone
group support

Add a little accountability.

Your buddy checks in daily. Your group meets each month. You’ll also agree a playful consequence if you miss your goal.

A small incentive to do what you said you would.

track your results

Find out what sticks.

Recording your mood daily in the mood app (included in your membership).

Share a short reflection at the end of each month.

  • What helped?
  • What did very little?
  • What would you like to keep?
Review the results

The London gathering

At the end of the 10 months we'll collate the results into one final report based on all of your reflections throughout the 10 months.

We’ll notice what moves the needle, keep what helps, and share what we discover.

Could each experiment make us 1% happier? And could we feel 10% happier by the end?

Let’s find out.

We aim to get our findings published in a leading publication at the end of the experiment.

In December 2027 we’ll gather in London for a 1 day workshop to go through the results and share our personal stories.

An honest account of what's changed over the course of the year.

  • The findings.
  • The stories.
  • The habits people want to keep.

The most useful result?

Something good you keep doing.

Teams win

You'll complete your experiments in small teams of 9-10.

Meet with your group once a month to reflect on that month's experiment - and to decide the "stick" for the next experiment.

We will create a dedicated team space for your group to help you stay in touch throughout the month.

You'll also have a buddy.

This will be someone at a workable timezone in your team, who you can check in with more regularly as time allows.

Your buddy is there for encouragement and a shared laugh.

The Experiments

The experiments will explore a few ordinary things that deserve more of our attention. They aren't finalised yet. But here are some examples of what they could look like

More time with people

Friends
Invite friends around for dinner. Before the house is finished. Before you’ve learnt to cook something impressive.
Courage
30 days of courageous conversations. Write thank-you letters. Tell someone what they mean to you.
Do Wales - Writing - Sharing Ideas - 2022
Shared learning
An alternative book club. What happens when we reimagine book groups as jigsaw learning?

Less phone. More movement.

Movement
20,000 steps a day? Could you walk the equivalent of Everest? Let's find out.
DO Wales - Be Retreat - Shhhh Sign
Sleep
How many sunrises can you see in a month? How would a 16 hour phone phast change your mood?
DO Wales 2024 - Sea Swimming
Reset
How much does a break from alcohol change your mood? What about meat? Sugar?

A little adventure. A little play

Adventure
Time to book a micro adventure with a friend. What tiny changes would make your life feel more adventurous?
Play
30 days to dance more. Sing more. Play more. Laugh more.
Create
How could 5 minutes a day of creativity change your mood?

More time to belong

Community
Could one small change a day make your street better? Your town better?
Gratitude
What does 30 days of gratitude look like? What would that feel like?
Give
Where in your life can you give back?

Why join this crazy experiment?

It doesn’t sound much, does it?

1%.

Why even bother?

We’re far happier when we chase big wins.

We’re also far less likely to achieve them.

We attempt to hit the ball out of the park. Take the big swing. Go for glory. And miss time after time after time.

Big wins are mostly false dawns.

We will never stop chasing them.

Their promise, even if they’ve let us down before, even when they tell us this time is different and we know it won’t be, the promise is too good to leave alone.

Dopamine is a dreamer.

Yet laying in plain sight are the small things we can do that everyday that add up.

Small wins are common.

Small wins are plentiful.

But small wins are dismissed because they look too small.

Yet, they can happen every day.

People want to change their life.

But don’t believe that it all starts with changing their day.

Change your day, change your week.

Change your week, change your month.

Change your month, change your year.

Small wins compound because they add up. Big wins don’t because they never materialise.

This is why I have decided to do The 1% Happier Club.

  • 9 experiments.
  • 100 people.
  • 1 gathering in London.

It’s an experiment.

It’s not another false dawn.

It’s a bet on the power of a small win.

The community.

This is why this will succeed.

Some weeks, you’ll be the person who needs a little encouragement.

Other weeks, you’ll be the one giving it.

That’s why we’re doing this together.

100 people. Different lives. Making a little more room for the things that matter.

Over ten months, we’ll get to know each other through ordinary things.

By the time we gather in London, we’ll have plenty to talk about.

What helped. What surprised us. What we want to keep.

And, hopefully, a few new friends to keep doing it with.

““Connection is why we’re here. It’s what gives purpose and meaning to our lives.””
Brené Brown,

Who is this for?

  • People who keep meaning to see their friends more.
  • People who want to spend less time on their phones.
  • People who’ve forgotten to make time for fun.
  • People who do a lot for others and leave little room for themselves.
  • People who want to move more, try something new or have a little adventure.
  • People who find it easier to keep going with someone alongside them.
  • Quiet people. Outgoing people. Somewhere-in-between people.
  • Anyone curious about what a few small changes could do.

You don’t need to be a founder.

You don’t need to arrive happy.

Just curious enough to try. And willing to make time.

Who is this NOT for?

  • People looking for a guaranteed result. This is an experiment.
  • People who are lone wolves. This is a team thing.
  • People who won’t show up.
  • You can be sceptical.
  • You can have a bad week.
  • You can miss a goal.

We ask that you give it a go.

And give the people alongside you a little encouragement.
