How the 8 channels work

Written by Rik ArronCreativity

Do Radio has 8 channels.

Not because we couldn’t think of 9, and not because 8 is some kind of magic broadcasting number. But because, when we laid everything out on the floor, every idea, every instinct, every hunch, kept coming back to these.

They’re the pillars that Do Lectures are founded on, and they’re the conversations we actually want to be having.

And so, once we had decided on the subjects, we had to find a way to structure the station to reflect the way that we would listen to the radio, and therefore our audience would hopefully want to listen to the radio.

We understand busy, but we also value learning, knowledge and good conversations. So (http://conversations.so/), we structured our week to allow everybody the possibility of catching the week’s worth of content each week. Whilst still juggling busy lives.

We decided less is more. There’s already too much content out there. We didn’t want to add to the noise, we wanted to be the respite from it.

So, we decided to create just 8 hours of new content per week.

One hour a week for each channel, but scheduled so you can have multiple opportunities to catch it throughout the week.

We wanted to make it possible, that you could listen to it all without feeling overwhelmed, and even have the time to join in the conversations with us.

Like the old days. When radio felt like a rhythm, not an algorithm.

The Channels themselves cover:

  • Entrepreneurship (Making Stuff Up)
  • Creativity (I Am Not Creative)
  • Environment (It’s Not About Trees)
  • Technology (Tomorrow’s World)
  • Wellbeing (Being Well)
  • Money (Miracles Happen Here)
  • Adventure (Where To Next?)
  • Mojo, money and time. (Three Wins)

The channel/show name will always remain the same, and while some channels are anchored by a single voice, others are passed like a baton with presenters hosting smaller series of the shows.

Some are hosted by people who don’t even see themselves as presenters. (We like that.)

Some will surprise you. (We like that even more.)

Our aim, over time, is to tackle each subject from every possible angle, and—in true DO style—as counter-intuitively as possible. We don’t want to be restricted or shackled by the subject matter, but rather explore it in ways that perhaps other radio stations and podcasts might not dare to.

This is a station that reflects the Do Lectures ethos of real talk. It’s for people doing the work, not just talking about it.

So you’ll hear experiments. False starts. Messy progress.

But underneath it all, you’ll hear heart.

We didn’t build Do Radio to sound like everyone else.

We built it to feel like home.

To feel like hope.

To feel like a conversation you actually want to be part of.

So come in.

Take your time.

And see where it takes you.
