My Personal Narrative

Robert McCrum
Associate Editor of the Observer/Author
“Telling stories is the way we make sense of our lives."

Robert has lived for 21 years in the shadow of life and death.

At the age of just 42 years old, he suffered a serious stroke and had to come to terms with the slowness and solitude of that suffering.

But alongside recovery came a sense of clarity and a realisation that we are all ill in one way or another. We live as though we are immortal. And yet we know that's not the case.

Robert became fascinated with how to reconcile these two thoughts - and shares the lessons he has learnt along the way.
